How to treat enamel hypoplasia?

Do you know the true importance of taking care of tooth enamel? Sometimes we forget that it is one of the most important parts of our teeth and we rely on the hardness of its tissue as a protective shield. However, this is not always the case and we can suffer from enamel hypoplasia.

This problem affects oral health, from primary to permanent dentition, because the enamel has not developed properly.

In order to detect it in time, the best solution is to have regular check-ups from childhood onwards. In this way, it will be possible to prevent further progression and damage. At our clinics in Tarragona or Salou we can help you as experts in Odontology and Paediatric Dentistry. Read on to find out more!

Characteristics of enamel hypoplasia

This disease originates in childhood and its cause is complicated to know. The main links are associated with calcium and vitamin deficiencies, coeliac disease, prenatal problems, long periods of viral infections...

Until the child's primary dentition is complete, signs of enamel hypoplasia would not begin to be detected. The most common are the appearance of cracks, pits and white or yellowish spots that give the dentition a rough and dull appearance.

Treatments for hypoplasia

Since enamel has no regenerative function and with hypoplasia its production is very low, it can only be treated externally to prevent the development of periodontal diseases. Depending on the degree of the disease, the treatment will depend on the degree of the disease:

  • Dental sealing: in case of mild signs, the chewing surface of the premolars and molars is filled and covered.
  • Tooth whitening: this is used if the stains are white and light, with the aim of offering a more aesthetic shade.
  • Dental microabrasion: the enamel layer is polished to remove the larger, darker stains caused by hypoplasia in the enamel. It is then filled with composite.
  • Carillas dentales: ante daño severo, se busca modificar de forma total la cara visible. Se utilizan unas finas laminas de porcelana o composite que se adhieren al diente ofreciendo un aspecto natural.
  • Dental implants: if the damage is very severe, the damaged teeth must be removed and replaced with artificial ones. This treatment should be avoided, as the tooth roots must be removed and replaced with metal pins.

In order to analyse your case in depth, we advise you to come to our Moreno Montalvo Dental Clinic in Tarragona or Salou, so that we can start your treatment as soon as possible. If taken in time, hypoplasia should not be a problem in your life, contact us!
